If the vacuum pump is the heart of your system, the valves are the nervous system. They control the pace, the pressure and the protection of your payload. But in the Aerospace and Defence sectors, a valve is never “just a valve”. It is the difference between a smooth Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) cycle and a catastrophic pressure spike.
When you’re designing a manifold for a space simulation chamber, you are fighting two battles: Conductance (speed) and Contamination (purity). Choosing the wrong valve type doesn’t just slow you down, it can jeopardize the entire test.
The Conductance King: Butterfly Valves

When you need to move massive volumes of gas quickly like when you’re dropping a chamber from atmospheric pressure to high vacuum, you need a Butterfly Valve.
Think of it as the “Express Lane”. Its slim, quarter-turn design uses a rotating disc to isolate or throttle flow. Because it takes up very little space in the line, it offers exceptionally high gas conductance. At Ultrahivac, we recommend these for large-diameter lines connecting your chamber to high-speed/high-vacuum pumps (like Turbos/Diffusion pumps).
The Aerospace Win: Their low profile makes them perfect for compact testing rigs where every centimeter of manifold space is a premium.
The Robust Workhorse: Ball Valves

For general isolation, especially on roughing lines or gas admittance systems, the Ball Valve is your go-to. When it’s open, you get a “full-bore”, straight-through path. It’s like the valve isn’t even there.
The Ball Valve is built for the “dirty” work. If your process involves any particulate carryover or dust, the ball valve’s design ensures there are no “pockets” for debris to hide in.
The Defence Win: In rugged industrial environments where reliability over thousands of cycles is non-negotiable, the ball valve is the “set it and forget it” solution.
Selection Guide: Which one is for you?

- Select Butterfly Valves if you are doing PVD/CVD coating, Space Simulation or any process requiring precise pressure throttling to protect sensitive optics.
- Select Ball Valves for roughing lines, gas admittance and processes where robustness is more important than pure gas speed.
At Ultrahivac, we don’t just supply valves; we engineer “Flow Solutions.” Whether manual or pneumatic, our SS304/316L valves are built for the rigors of the most demanding labs on (and off) the planet.
